Clue No 1

Cholyngham always surprised Charlotte. One minute you were bowling along a tree-lined, serpentine driveway; the next you were rounding a bend and beholding the stately granite pile reflected in the lake in front of it. The house (it was more of a castle, really) had been constructed in the neo-Gothic style – all turrets and battlements and slit-windowed towers. It looked just like a castle in a fairytale – the kind you’d expect to find princesses languishing in.
